2016 DBE National AGM

Article by Jim McCulloch

Five ladies of the DBE in Tennessee and their husbands left Knoxville for the seven hour drive to St Louis Missouri to attend the 2016 National AGM, to be held in the Hilton Garden Inn St Louis.

On arriving everyone met up at various times and went off exploring the City Centre. What a beautiful city it is. lots to see and do while free time allowed.

That evening we all met up and went to eat in Tony’s Restaurant opposite the hotel. If you ever go to St Louis this is the place to eat for fine dining, wonderful food service and ambiance.

The next day saw the first day of the conference. Over a 100 delegates attended from many of the US States.
While the ladies went about their business, the husbands went about enjoying themselves, Wayne Jones and I went to play golf with a few of the husbands from other states and had a bonus added to our day when the Blue Angels flew into the local airport, Fred Anderson and Joyann visited some  gardens as well as the Botanical gardens. he said they were amazing to see.

Friday evening saw us all head out to the St Louis History Museum for a “Little Black Dress” reception. Very nice location and we all enjoyed the camaraderie and chat. After this we had dinner in the Bar Italia Ristorante before returning to the hotel to meet up with many of the DBE ladies in the 360 Lounge on top of the hotel where the views of St Louis and the Baseball ground were breathtaking.

Saturday dawned and the ladies once again convened to continue their meetings in the Hotel while Wayne and I went to the Anheuser Busch brewery situated about 15 minutes from the hotel. It was great to see the Clydesdale horses outside before heading into what turned out to be a beautifully designed brewery. it was hard to believe we were in a working brewery, the architecture was amazing. That afternoon Pete Peters, husband to Libby the outgoing National President, arranged for us as well as Gill Perkins and Joyann to go and see the St Louis Cardinals Play the Pittsburgh Pirates, what a thrilling baseball game with the Cardinals taking the game in the last innings.

Saturday evening was the formal dinner event, which turned out to be excellent. Dancing to a wonderful band, a great dinner and once again a  chance to meet many people from all over the US. The event rounded up by us all singing and dancing to Auld Lang Syne. A sad time to say goodbye to all our new found friends.

Sunday morning before heading home to Knoxville, myself and Joan, Diane and Wayne Jones, Hilary and Larry Abercrombie all went on one of the tours to the top of the St Louis Arch. a very exciting journey in a tiny little 5 person pod up the amazing 630 foot structure which is still the tallest man-made national monument in the United States.
After this breathtaking experience we checked out and returned to Tennessee.

Joan and I would like to thanks the entire DBE National Board for a wonderful weekend, and we look forward to the next AGM.
